Jess Johnston & Jess Hillard - Superior 2760

Here's an extremely rare 78. This is fiddler Jess Johnston from West Virginia playing the piano and singing and Jess Hillard playing guitar with him. The flip side is just Jess Hillard.

These sides were recorded by Gennett Records in Richmond, IN in the latter part of 1931. The record was released on January 30, 1932 and kept in print until August 31, 1932. Total sales figures for this release were 341 copies. To my knowledge, this record has never been reissued, so this is the only place you can get it. So treasure this one! Not only is it rare, but it's GOOD!!!

  1. Thanks for this one! I keep pestering you I know, but would you be interested in digitizing some vinyl for me? I'd be happy to pay for it.

Thanks again for this rarity :) I'm cataloging where I'm getting all my mp3s from, so if I ever repost it, I can direct folks to the right source.

All the best to you - Kegan

  2. Outstanding! I think I heard this a few years back from a copy in a buddy's collection. Where did you get the details regarding sales figures? (This is a topic I have always been very curious about..especially regarding the smaller labels)

  5. Record Research magazine published all of Superior's release information and sales figures in Issue 37, August 1961. That is where I got my information.

  7. So why does the label say Bert Shaw? I don't see any mention of anybody named Jess.

  8. To answer Derik, tons of record labels in this era used psuedonyms to keep from having to pay royalties or to protect artists who were under contract to another record label.
