Here's a great record. If you ever wanted to know what real cowboy singing was like, well I bet this is about as close to that as you'll ever find. This is Dick Devall doing two old cowboy songs. This is the real deal: inaccompanied singing. This is probably what they sounded like singing out west is 1849. Great Authentic Stuff!!

Chumbler's Breakdown Gang

Here's an interesting record that will sort of defy some information that has been in several discographies. For years, QRS 9016 has been said to be Charlie Poole and the Highlanders under the presumed pseudonym Chumbler's Mountain Gang, but after this record has finally been found (this is likely the only known copy), it is obvious that it is not Charlie Poole. Also, Country Music Records 1921-1942 says that this record's sides are Tennessee Blues and May I Sleep In Your Barn Tonight, Mister; neither of which are correct. The sides here are East Tennessee Blues and Under the Double Eagle. So, I assumed that this was the Chumbler Family, but after checking their discography, these sides are not listed. So, I checked the index for East Tennessee Blues and the only groups that are listed are Elmer Bird, Richard Cox, Hill Billies, and Johnson Sisters Trio. None of these groups recorded Under the Double Eagle, but if you look at Chumbler's Breakdown Gang under Chumbler Family and Associated Groups, you will see that only one side, matrix 405 - Brown Mule Slide, is listed. The matrices on this record are 406 and 407, the next two numbers in the sequence. So, it seems as though this record is not under a pseudonym after all. Apparently, these sides were only issued on QRS. They were recorded April 1927 for Paramount Records in Long Island City, NY. This is good music! So, y'all all enjoy!

Now here's some great old time singing! I have no information of this group. Its safe to assume that they were probably from East TN, West NC, East WV or Southwest VA because this was recorded in Johnson City, TN on October 18, 1928. These are the only sides that they cut.

One thing I should note: Their version of My Old Cottage Home predates the Carter Family's recording of it by 2 and a half years.

The Cauley Family

Here are all the issued Cauley Family records for ARC. They were recorded August 7-9, 1934 in New York, NY. According to the discography, only the first four sides in this post were issued, however a friend of mine ran accros a copy of the record that is pictured above. Apparently, this record was issued, though it is listed as unissued in the discography. This is probably because this pressing was made especially for a retailer with a chain of a few stores in Virginia and North Carolina. That is what the prefix JL stands for. The initials of the man who owned the chain of stores was J.L. and he was actually the person who took the Cauleys to New York to record. In the discography, however, it does list Grey Eagle and Darling Nellie Gray/Little Brown Jug as issued under JL-100. The supposedly-unissued record found here is JL-103, so it would be safe to assume that JL-102 is the Cauley Family as well, and likely more supposedly-unissued sides, but I know of no copies of JL-102 that exist. Maybe some collectors out there can turn that up. But at this point, this is all that there is to offer of the Cauley Family!! So Enjoy!!!

Roy Harvey - Goodbye Mary Dear - Champ 16331

This song was recorded June 3, 1931 in Richmond, IN.

In all Roy Harvey reissues that have been done, this side has never showed up nor has it been listed in the Harvey discographies. On page 411 in Tony Russell's "Country Music Records," this side (17783) is listed as Goodbye Maggie, Goodbye Darling. However the song before that, "By a Cottage in the Twilight" (17782), is the same song as "Goodbye Maggie, Goodbye Darling." So somewhere along the way 17783 got mislabeled in the discography. Maybe that is why this song has never showed up in any reissues. There is a possibility that this is the only known copy of this record as well, and the illegibility of the label could have easily caused it to be mistaken for "Goodbye Maggie, Goodbye Darling."

Anyway, here it is and I hope you'll enjoy it even though it is very rough and has a skip in the middle of the second verse.

Early Charlie Poole Influences

Many folks don't always realize the profound influence that early pop music has had on traditional string band and old time music as we know it today. One of the great pioneers of the 78 era of old time music was Charlie Poole. A few years ago, Sony Music issued a box set of 3 cds containing many Charlie Poole recordings and earlier pop recordings of the same songs. This set did a great job demonstrating the influence of early popular music on old time.

Well, just tonight at a friend's house, I heard the record pictured above and was excited to find yet another song that obviously directly influenced Charlie Poole. Charlie had to have either owned a copy of this record himself or heard it numerous times, because in 1929 his band recorded a skit record for Brunswick records in which he performs this version of Turkey in the Straw. I have uploaded a dub of the Harmony 78 and the excerpt from Charlie's record where he sings this Turkey in the Straw.

Its a rare opportunity to be able to listen to something that we can be nearly certain that one of the greats in old time music listened too as well!

Abel S. Browning

Here is a very interesting record. This was discovered in a batch of 78s in the last few days by a friend of mine. This is an acetate record that was made March 22, 1938 by Fiddler Abel S. Browning of Oakland, MD. Mr. Browning was 84 years old at the time which means that he would have been born around 1854. He was still playing quite well at this age as you will hear.

All of the tunes here are not familiar to me, except for Arkansas Traveler and Washington March, which bares some similarity to Bonaparte Crossing the Rhine.

I've tried to find some information on him and can nothing online except for a couple references to him made by Pennsylvania fiddler Walter Neal. If anyone knows anything about Mr. Browning, please let me know.

Charlie Parker & Mack Woolbright

I have been trying for months to put this post together, and finally it is here! This is the complete recorded output of Charlie Parker and Mack Woolbright. Woolbright has gained some noteriety in last few years because of his influence on Earl Scruggs particularly on the tune Home Sweet Home. You will notice a distinct similarity to Scruggs' version of Home Sweet Home when you hear Woolbright play The Man that Wrote Home Sweet Home Never Was a Married Man.

These sides were all recorded in two sessions in Atlanta, GA in 1927. There is clawhammer banjo featured on several of these tunes. It is possible that Parker is on banjo on those sides and Woolbright guitar, but it is certain that the 3-finger style picking on these recordings is in indeed Woolbright. This is really fantastic music and singing! ENJOY!!

It's just really nice old time 2-finger banjo picking and singing backed by piano. I assume that Jimmy Gregg is from east Tennessee since this record is on the Kingsport label. Here's a really great album featuring the A.L. Phipps family and other artists. The Phipps family plays in a very similar style to the Original Carter Family, but the neat thing is that they perform a lot of different songs than the Carters did, so it's nice to hear these other songs in the style of the Original Carters. This album also features the Alton Delmore's Brown's Ferry Four, Carl Story, and the Original Carter Family.

Wade Mainer - First Time in Stereo LP

Here's a Wade Mainer album that you don't see very often. I will assume that it was probably Wade's first album for Old Homestead. This album was recorded in November 1971. Interestingly, it is titled "First Time in Stereo," however that is not accurate because Wade and Julia Mainer's last session for King in 1961 that featured Red Wilson on fiddle was recorded in stereo, and it is one of Wade's best sessions in my opinion. It may be that the 1961 King session was never issued in stereo by 1971, but it was definetely recorded in stereo. This session is available on 2 cd set, Wade Mainer: I'm Not Looking Backward.

Here's a really great shaped-note singing record. This is not a sacred harp record, because the singers here are using the Do-Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Si syllables. I'm not sure which book utilized those syllables or what the shapes would have been for those; especially the syllable "Si."

Anyway, this is a great record and a very rare one. In fact, it is possible that this is the only known copy of this 78. So, consider yourself priviledged to be able to hear this one. It's really nice singing.

Allen Sisson - Complete Recorded Works

Well, I think it's about darn time I put up another post here. I've been dealing with the record transferer's burn-out here lately.

Thanks to fellow collector, Kilby Spencer, I now have the complete recorded works of Allen Sisson. Born August 31, 1873, he is one of the oldest recorded old time fiddlers in America. He was originally from Fannin County, GA but spent a good many years in Ducktown, TN.

I have taken a lot of time with these recordings to assure that they are at the correct speed. There is a little bit of variance in them, but they are quite close to where they should be. I hope that you all will enjoy these sides.

Edison session pianist, John F. Burckhardt, is Sisson's backup on these sides.

Jess Johnston & Jess Hillard - Superior 2760

Here's an extremely rare 78. This is Jess Johnston from West Virginia playing the piano and singing Don't Let Your Deal Go Down and Jess Hillard playing guitar with him. The other side is just Jess Hillard playing guitar and singing Dog Gone Them Blues.

These sides were recorded by Gennett Records in Richmond, IN in the latter part of 1931. The record was released on January 30, 1932 and kept in print until August 31, 1932. Total sales figures for this release were 341 copies. To my knowledge, this record has never been reissued, so this is the only place you can get it. So treasure this one! Not only is it rare, but it's GOOD!!!

Here's all of Wade Mainer's Bluebird recordings. This post will complete all of the Mainer Bluebird recordings. Even though Wade didn't use this name, I've chosen to title this as Wade Mainer's Mountaineers, because the it just seems appropriate. Wade used a couple of names such as "Sons of the Mountaineers" and "Smiling Rangers." Most of the Montgomery Ward issues of Mainer records (including JE) just listed them as Mainer's Mountaineers with no distinction between J.E.'s group and Wade's group so it can be confusing. If you would like the details on which sessions are by which group names and all, see pp. 582-585 in Country Music Records by Tony Russell. Special thanks to Kilby for these recordings.

Fiddlin' Arthur Smith at home

Here's some of the best recordings of Arthur Smith that I think I've ever heard. His fiddling on these recordings is absolutely incredible. Sadly, the recording quality is really bad, I think from dubbing over and over. Judging from how good Arthur is fiddling here, I really think that these recordings were made in the mid, maybe early 1950s. I'm sure that y'all will enjoy these!

I'm sorry that it has been so long since I've posted anything. My life has been extremely busy in the last 2 months, and I've been out of town alot of that time. I actually got these recordings from a friend while I was out of town last week. If there is anyone out there has better dubs of these, please let me know.

The Four Pickled Peppers

Here is a near complete collection of the Four Pickled Peppers. I'm missing two sides: The Woman I Love and My Little Nappanee. If anyone has these, please let me know.

These fellows were from an area of NC which is now called Eden. This is also the same area in which Charlie Poole lived. The primary guitarist on these sides is Norman Woodlieff who recorded 6 sides with Charlie Poole in 1925. In fact, all of these guys either knew of played with Charlie Poole. Another interesting note is that Lonnie Austin(also a Poole contemporary), the fiddler on the 1939 session was actually supposed to be playing piano on that session. The band had worked up all of their selections with piano breaks and such, but Frank Walker (who was in charge of the session) wouldn't allow a piano in a stringband, so Lonnie had to go get a fiddle from somewhere to do the session. This information comes Lonnie Austin by way of Kinney Rorrer.

Wilmer Watts and the Lonely Eagles

Here is a near complete collection of Wilmer Watts' Paramount Recordings. I am missing two sides: Chain Gang Special and Take This Little Bunch of Roses. If anyone has these, please let me know as I would love to obtain copies of them. I sincerely apologize for the poor quality on some of these sides: When the Roses Bloom Again in particular. This is actually a pretty good copy, but it was just a sorry pressing by the record company. Paramount also owned a furniture factory and they mixed finely ground sawdust into the shellac that they pressed their records on to make the material go further. This is a major contributing factor as to why Paramount's records sound so bad.

Also I will mention: I DO NOT believe in using ANY TYPE of filters to remove hiss or clicks. These devices do nothing but hurt the integrity of the frequency range of the music. I will sometimes use an equalizer, but only in severe cases such as When the Roses Bloom. I get cds and downloads sometimes and it is obvious that the recordings have been filtered in some way. To me, once this is done, I'd just about rather not listen to it at all. The clarity of music is in the high frequencies and you lose that with these blasted filters. And one other thing I need to mention: some of the recordings in this download have been filtered before they came to me, so that is not my doing. Okay, I'm off the soapbox. Enjoy Wilmer!

Original Carter Family's Last Performance 1953

There are tons of photos of the Carter Family, but I've never seen one late enough to be really fitting for this post, so I've just decided to post it without a photo. It has been said numerous times in tv documentaries and by people that should know better that the Original Carter Family (AP, Sara, and Maybelle) did not perform together anymore after sometime in the early 1940s. This just isn't so. Here is a live recordings of A.P., Sara, and Maybelle in 1953 performing at a memorial event for Jimmie Rodgers in Meridian, Mississippi.

Apparently, there were quite a few major figures in country music there. Check out this youtube video of Roy Acuff sharing his memories of the Rodgers memorial event in Meridian.

There are two live cuts here from the 1970 Old Fiddler's Convention: John Henry and Hitchiker's Blues. This has got to be the best version of John Henry I've ever heard. J.E. Mainer's Mountaineers - King Recordings

Here are 16 of J.E. Mainer's Mountaineer's King sides recorded in 1946. Syd Nathan didn't like fiddle music and this is evident in that the fiddle is really only featured on about 7 out of the 16 sides. Even though J.E. Mainer was the fiddler and that was a big part of his sound, that apparently didn't change Syd Nathan's mind.

I wish I knew the personnel of these sides. Special thanks to Jim, from whose collection these come from, for allowing me to post these here on my blog.

The Blue Ridge Buddies

Here's a group that not too many know anything about. These folks were from in and around Danville, VA. To my knowledge, these are the only commercial recordings that they made. I'm assuming that these sides were recorded somewhere around 1962. Some of you may recognize the bass player, Allen Mills, as the band leader of the popular bluegrass band, The Lost and Found.

The Four Virginians

Here is a group of old timers from my area. This is an 8-track tape that they made in the 1970s sometime. Some of you might interested to know that this band recorded in 1927 for Okeh Records. The personnel was not the same; in fact I think the only member that was at the Okeh session was Richard "Jim" Bigger, the fiddler. This music is an excellent example of the Piedmont style of old time music found in South Central Virginia.

You banjo enthusiasts might be interested to know that the banjo player on this is Posey Roach. Jim Mills now owns Posey's 1940 RB-75. He recorded with it on his album, Hide Head Blues.

Carl Story and his Rambling Mountaineers 1939

Here are some really interesting recordings. This is Carl Story's band in 1939 featuring Johnny Whisnant on the banjo. I'm not going to call this bluegrass, but it sure was a whole lot closer to bluegrass than what Bill Monroe was doing in '39 at least by the banjo pickin. San Antonio Rose is the real jewel of this collection.

I'm unsure of the personnel on this except that it's Carl Story and Johnny Whisnant. Story may be playing fiddle on some of this. I don't actually have the 7" LP that this came out on in 1973, so my information is limited. Just take it for what it is, and enjoy!
